Powdered Sugar Icing Is An Ideal Cake Topping If You're Not A Frosting Fan
By Laura Zbinden
If you're the type of person who thinks that frosting is just too overwhelmingly sweet, then powdered sugar icing may be the best dessert topping for you.
While frosting is thick and can be painted onto a dessert in layers, icing is thin and has to be drizzled on your cooled dessert.
Icing gives you the perfect amount of sweetness without overwhelming a dessert and is much easier than making frosting as it requires fewer ingredients.
Powdered sugar icing tastes great and is good on all kinds of desserts, including sugar cookies, lemon bundt cakes, and deliciously light and fluffy strawberry angel food cakes.
To make the icing, whisk together 1 cup of sifted powdered sugar and ¼ teaspoon of vanilla extract in a bowl. Once combined, add 1 tablespoon of milk or water and whisk it again.
You can add more liquid if you want it thinner or more powdered sugar if you want it thicker. Repeat this process until you have reached your desired consistency.
Once your icing is ready, drizzle it over the top of your cooled dessert. The icing will begin to harden in 20-30 minutes, and then your dessert is ready to serve.
You can also use lemon juice instead of milk or water, swap the vanilla for almond extract, or add 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder to the original recipe for chocolate icing.
