Does Broccoli Actually Contain More Protein Than Steak?

While some say that nutrient-filled broccoli has more protein than a steak, most vegetables, including broccoli, lack one or more essential amino acids and are considered incomplete proteins. However, this doesn’t mean vegetables like broccoli are inferior to meat and other sources of complete protein.
The amount of protein in steak depends on the cut, but regardless, it’s still higher than that of broccoli and other veggies. However, broccoli contains more protein per calorie than steak, as this veggie has only 35 calories — of which one-third are protein — per 3.5 ounces, whereas the same amount of prime rib steak delivers 341 calories.
A serving of steak is 3 ounces, providing around 20 grams of protein, while a serving of broccoli is 5.5 ounces, offering 3.7 grams of plant-based protein. You would need to eat about 2.5 pounds of broccoli to get the same amount of protein as in 3.5 ounces of ribeye steak, but broccoli is still a healthy and nutritious protein option, especially if you want to reduce your red meat intake.
