Before launching her freelance career, she taught Core Humanities and French at the University of Nevada, Reno, and Truckee Meadows Community College. Engrid Barnett has a Ph.D. from the University of Nevada, Reno, in cultural geography where she studied the early psychedelic rock scene at Virginia City, Nevada's Red Dog Saloon.
